Abstract

Is there a realistic way to reduce the effects of the urban heat island effect in inner neighbourhoods with green surfaces on the building stock? One of the problems of big cities is the heat island phenomenon. Budapest is no exception from that, one of the most severely affected areas is the VII. district. We looked for a way to improve the quality of life and the cityscape. The most obvious solution is to increase the green areas, however, the dense installation of buildings does not allow any large-area vegetation. At the same time, firewalls created as a result of closed-frame installation offer themselves as a free surface for the construction of green walls. Is there a realistic possibility to reduce the effects of the urban heat island phenomenon in the inner parts of the city with green surfaces placed on the building stock? We think so! In order to make the task of urban planners easier, we have created an algorithm that helps to select the type of green wall by classifying the available back structures on buildings.
