CHALLENGES FACING BIG CITIES IN THE LIGHT OF LIVEABILITY

The first part of the article introduces the human environment and its changes in relation to population growth. It takes stock of the changes that have occurred in the past 100 years. It examines how architects and engineers shaping our communities have influenced the environment and how the development of the industry has impacted the economic model, presenting challenges to societies as a result. It explores the urban organization trends in the built environment and the difficulties these processes have generated. The second part of the article presents the situation of Budapest, Hungary’s most populous city, and its closely connected agglomeration. It discusses the transformation of the capital’s transportation system, air quality issues, and housing opportunities. It addresses the current challenges facing Budapest and seeks answers to how the engineering community can provide positive responses to these challenges and make Budapest more livable through developments that can address contemporary issues and serve the health and well-being of its residents.
