Abstract

Nowadays, stone arch bridges are facing significant additional loads, and their structural condition is generally deteriorating due to the lack of maintenance, which can also result in a significant decrease in load bearing capacity. The article outlines various types of damages, as well as the possibilities for their prevention and repair. It describes various computational and verification methods that can be used to determine and check the load bearing capacity of a given structure. For determining effective interventions and long-term solutions it is crucial to understand the complex processes which often stand behind structural damages. With appropriate interventions, such as reinforcement or replacing damaged parts, significant improvements can be achieved in the condition of the affected structures. Finally, the article highlights the importance of the regular surveys and logging of the condition of our stone arch bridges are important basement to prevent the damage and determine the necessary measures. These activities enable engineers to monitor potential changes in the condition of the bridge and recognize in time when intervention is needed. With this proactive approach, the lifespan of stone bridges can be significantly extended, ensuring the safety of traffic passing over them.
