For more than 150 years, the Institute of Wood Architecture at the University of Sopron has represented the science of architecture at the institution. Its professors at the predecessor Academy of Mining and Forestry in Selmecbánya and later at the Sopron Academy / College of Mining and Forestry provided hundreds of mining, metallurgical and forestry engineers with high-quality architectural knowledge essential to their work, while also conducting research and supporting the development of the institution's infrastructure with their expertise. Over a century and a half, new courses such as the wood engineering and the MSc in Architecture have been launched, which have also broadened the Institute's teaching and research palette, with a strong emphasis on wood architecture. The Institute's lecturers, as active designers, have always attached great importance to up-to-date professional knowledge and to a lively and intensive contact with design and construction practice. This tradition continues today with the transmission of a wide range of knowledge in architecture and wood architecture.
